What is Bleed?

Making sure your designs contain 3mm bleed is one of the most crucial steps to making sure your labels are printed perfectly!

What is bleed?

In printing, bleed refers to the part of the artwork that extends outside the area where your artwork will be cut. In other words, the bleed will be trimmed off when our printers cut your labels to size.

Imagine we tried to cut your design on the very edge of the artwork. It would be really hard to get it 100% in perfect alignment with the edge. Printers have the same issue. Imagine if the printer prints even 0.001mm off alignment, you will end up with a white sliver or uneven edge. To counter this, we move the whole artwork inwards, and edit cutlines in 3mm from the edge, This way, if the printer prints off alignment ever so slightly, you won't ever know!

How to check that my artwork has bleed?

If using canva, make sure you save your artwork as a PRINT PDF. You can then click 'add bleed and crop marks'.

What does an artwork with bleed look like?

An experienced Graphic Designer will ALWAYS make sure your artwork contains bleed. But, if designing yourself we know that sometimes it can be tricky.

If you aren't using a program like Canva, and want to create bleed manually. All you have to do is ensure there is no text, or important elements too close to the edge. Imagine you are drawing a thin 'border' around your artwork. Is all the text on the inside of this border? If so, that is great and all you need to do!
