Design Trends of 2022

Happy New Year lovely LSS family! (We don’t think it’s too late to say this 😉). We are excited for 2022! And what better way to kick off this sparkling new year than to take a glimpse at the hottest design trends!

As many of us know, design is a VERY personal thing! What someone finds beautiful, another can find somewhat unpleasant. What one person thinks is bold, the next person reckons it is over the top!

Here at LSS, we are aware and sensitive of this fact when we create your labels. This is why we send you comprehensive questionnaires before we start, so we understand your tastes and preferences!

However, it is always interesting to read about what is considered a ‘hot trend’ by experts and other professionals in the design world. So we put together a list of some of these trends that are predicted to be 2022 favorites.

And even if some of these suggestions aren’t quite our cup of tea, we enjoy being inspired by new ideas and approaches to design!

Here are some of our finds:

Color

very peri

This year, Pantone’s Color of the Year is Very Peri - which most closely resembles periwinkle, with a touch of violet undertones.

It is described on the official Pantone website as having a “sprightly, joyous attitude and dynamic presence that encourages courageous creativity and imaginative expression.”

And the decision to crown this hue is not reached lightly. A lot of thought, consideration and rationale goes into making this selection. Yet what is extra special about this year’s Pantone is that it is created by Pantone themselves!

According to Laurie Pressman, the Vice President of the Pantone Color Institute (what a fun job!) this is the rationale behind Very Peri’s win:

“The Pantone Color of the Year reflects what is taking place in our global culture, expressing what people are looking for that color can hope to answer.”
“Creating a new color for the first time in the history of our Pantone Color of the Year educational color program reflects the global innovation and transformation taking place. As society continues to recognize color as a critical form of communication, and a way to express and affect ideas and emotions and engage and connect, the complexity of this new red violet infused blue hue highlights the expansive possibilities that lay before us”.

We’ll take that!

And if Very Peri doesn’t really do it for you, other colours that are touted to be popular this year are Guacamole, Soft Melon and Alabaster.

Patterns

Choosing a stand-out pattern is like selecting your favorite life memory - there are simply too many to choose from! And let’s face it, some memories cannot and should not be compared to one another.

Yet according to some design experts, these following patterns are set to be big hits this year:

Earth-Inspired

earth inspired

With the environment and climate change firmly in the headlines, this is a trend that may last beyond 2022. We love this theme as it is so vast, and covers varying tastes - from feminine floral motifs to bold, vivid foliage, from ethereal sky-blues and soft sage greens, to ruddy clay tones and earthy browns.

Bold Botanicals

Taking the lead from the above Earth-Inspired theme, it’s predicted that striking floral imagery will be a popular choice in design. We especially like this trend, as it naturally lends itself to Australiana flora - which is often found as ingredients in many of your products! And rather than botanical imagery just being a part of the background, it’s expected that this year they will take front and centre position!

Mod and Retro

retro

It never ceases to amaze us just how cyclical trends are! Also referred to as Modern Vintage, this trend boasts curved and oblong forms in patterns. Other features typical of this style are abstract illustrations, and loose brush strokes.

Font styles

Fonts can sometimes end up being an after-thought. Yet did you know that different fonts can influence thoughts, feelings, and even behaviors? There is even such a thing as font-psychology (which deserves its own article)! Here are a couple of font trends that have made the 2022 list:

Authentic Handwriting

With an increasing focus being placed on mental health and human connection, this font style certainly fits the bill. And the messier, the better! The idea is that it looks like someone - a real human! - has hand-written on your product, which in turn creates a more direct connection with the reader.

Bold Thick Strokes

This font trend puts the words right at the center stage of the design. The wide, thick, empathic presence of the letters draws the eyes directly to them, and ensures the font is an integral part of eye-catching creations.
